International Year of Woman Farmers 2026
The United Nations declared 2026 the International Year of the Woman Farmer (IYWF 2026). The Year recognizes the work women do across food and farming, from field to market, and pushes to close gender gaps in access to land, finance, and services.
Here at Tó Nizhóní Ání (Sacred Water Speaks), we’re highlighting our Food Sovereignty Coordinator, Audrey Narindrankura, from the Hardrock community on Dził Yíjiin (Black Mesa region) in the Navajo Nation. Audrey grew up farming and ranching on Black Mesa; today she leads our organization’s food sovereignty efforts.
Women farmers have always fed community, anywhere and everywhere. Through livestock, crops, and foraging, they bring food to the tables of so many families. Audrey shares where her growing began. How the food she raises reaches the tables of families and enters the ceremonies of Diné (Navajo) People. And how she plants for what is ahead, because the people of Dził Yíjiin must find a way, and they will.
